The Unity of Bailey and Buddhism "True service is the spontaneous outflow of a loving heart and an intelligent mind;
It is produced by the inevitable inflow of spiritual force and not by strenuous physical plane activity; It is the effect of a man's being what he truly is, a divine Son of God, and not by the studied effect of his words or deeds." from Alice A. Bailey's A Treatise in White Magic, Rule Five section
Bailey mostly emphasized (in her books) what would now be called by modern Buddhists, the Mahayana view, emphasizing compassion and skillful world service and the direct awareness of physical, astral, mental, soul and spiritual natures. Additionally she alluded to the Hinayana and to the advanced school techniques (for example the duality technique and esoteric meditations), that are the work of initiate schools or what we Buddhists call Vajrayana, Tantrayana or Zen training. Don't be afraid and think for one second that Bailey teaches anything different or even slightly beyond what the Tibetan Buddhists do, except for relating to a cultural context. It seems different because she had to come up with English descriptions of of the higher teaching impressions she was receiving. I feel sorry for newer students as the diversity of language can be confusing. Please don't give up on these fabulous teachings and don't listen to what other people say, but instead find out the truth and the meaning for yourself through study, contemplation and asking real teachers. The spiritual path is too wonderful to be afraid to seek and question.
What Bailey did was monumental considering that she was responsible for not merely passing on, but for translating the higher Eastern Wisdom to the Western language style.Very noble! The complexity in even translating one short spiritual text, along with the fact that one can only understand up to one's own limited level on the mental (or astral) plane made her task anything but easy.
From the 1950's to the present a amazing and wondrous series of events has taken place. Scores of highly sacred Tibetan and Indian Master's Buddhist Texts of previously secret ancient wisdom have been translated and published or written down in Western languages. I can attest that these books are the authentic dharma and have been a great help to me.
Modern Tibetan Buddhist have now settled on much agreed upon terminology, making it easier to read and get much out of the texts. You should know though, that its going to be tough to read Bailey if you've only read other Buddhist teachings, AND its going to be tough to read the esoteric post-Bailey teachings if you have only read Bailey, IF....
,,,your level of understanding is on the lower part of the fifth sub-plane of the mental plane or lower. If you are not willing to work on yourself and move up sub-sub-plane by sub-sub-plane, then this is not a time to be involved in esoteric work. (Bailey style answer!)or in modern Buddhist terminology....
Lacking a clear understanding, things that are harmonious on deeper levels seem to clash. Because the esoteric teachings are profound, it is not possible to understand them with the ordinary reasoning. This is why it is taught that one should be patient and study gradually for a long time to be able to grasp more and more of what is ULTIMATELY true.
With this, may the Bailey and Post-Bailey Buddhists be open to find each others treasures!
The important thing to know is that the spiritual teachings are accurate. Where they seem to not make sense is where we are lacking in our understanding, or where I have held a wrong view (in Alice's style, glamour!)
I am making a list of similar important topics which have different names in the New Buddhist and the Bailey translations. By no means is this an exhaustive list, and I'm asking for topics that have been confusing. I really hope that this list can be of benefit to you. Please send me you comments and ideas as I would like to see this extended and sent to many of the Bailey groups. Thank you.
Sincerely, Sol Ta Triane, Founder of The Lotus Organization
